Labuschagne Dropped from Australian One-Day International Lineup to Face Team India

The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from Australia's three-match ODI series versus India, with in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw getting a surprise selection.

Performance Issues Lead to Omission

Labuschagne has been omitted from the ODI squad following being dismissed for one in his two batting efforts during the top-end series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a highest score of 47 in his most recent ten ODI innings.

The 31-year-old has featured in 68 one-day internationals and amassed 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a Test recall ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.

Surprise Inclusion and Team Updates

There have been indications of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw also hit a hundred for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.

The left-hander may to make his white-ball international debut in the upcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.

Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a return to the Test team as Australia search for a solution to their top-order woes.

Pace Returns and Injury News

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after being rested since starring for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.

Skipper Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a spinal issue by the time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Strategy and Fixtures

Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-match series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the last match against New Zealand to clinch a series clean sweep last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”

Australia’s three-game ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from 29 October.
